Hamilton Police Service (HPS) has charged a man for being in possession of a bomb.

During the early hours of Monday morning (February 1), HPS was informed of a man in crisis in the parking lot of Lime Ridge Mall.

Upon arrival, responding officers discovered the man sitting in his car by himself, and attempted to deescalate the situation.

However, shortly before 8 a.m., the man attempted to flee the parking lot, which had been barricaded off by HPS.

As he merged onto Upper Wentworth Street, HPS contained his vehicle, and he was taken into custody without injury.

During a search of the car, HPS discovered what they believed to be a bomb.

The Emergency Response Unit was called to the scene to investigate—they confirmed the device was a bomb and successfully disarmed it without any injuries.

The suspect—a 44-year-old man from Hamilton—was taken to hospital to receive treatment. He has been charged with possession of an explosive deceive, and he is scheduled to appear at the John Sopinka Courthouse on Tuesday, February 2.
