The City of Hamilton is reporting 51 cases of COVID-19 in the city as of Friday (March 27).
That’s eight new cases in Hamilton since Thursday.

Dr. Bart Harvey, Associate Medical Officer of Health for Hamilton’s Public Health Service (PHS), confirmed that one of the cases is an employee of the Barton Street Jail.

PHS is working with the detention centre to determine who has come into contact with the person and deep cleaning of places where this person might have been.
“Our main job here is to as best we can is to eliminate the risk of this virus spreading from person to person,” Harvey said.
At this point there have been 12 cases of COVID-19 in Hamilton that indicate that there is spread in the community, in addition to other travel-related cases, the city’s website says.
Harvey spoke about how Hamilton is starting to see cases of people who have had the virus who are no longer testing positive.
There are three confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Hamilton that Harvey says have now been resolved.
“They are now presumably immune to the virus,” Harvey said of the city’s resolved cases.
Harvey continued to stress the importance of maintaining the prescribed two-meter physical distance from others when out in public.
“It’s really that six-foot safety zone [that has to be maintained],” he said. “This virus isn’t an Olympian and can’t jump that two meters.”
He also stressed the importance of sanitizing well-used surfaces often and thoroughly as the virus, under ideal conditions, Harvey said, can survive for up to nine days.
