Hamilton house where ‘it all began’ for The Arkells is up for sale

The Westdale house where “it all began” for Hamilton’s The Arkells, is up for sale.

Located at 85 Arkell St. in West Hamilton, the house feature six plus two bedrooms, three bathrooms and the sense that if these walls could talk, what a story they’d tell.

The all-brick home, with an asking price of $779,000, is alleged to be the place where The Arkells, whose members attended McMaster University in the early 2000s, came together.

The band’s name was inspired by the street on which the home stands and on Monday (March 29), The Arkells Tweeted that given its historic value it should perhaps be gifted to them and designated a historic site.

Fans were quick to grasp the idea, with some suggesting a GoFund Me page to raise the funds to make it happen.

“I’m certain we can start a go fund me to buy it for you all,” one wrote. “But we’ll need an MTV Real World type of show in return.”

Last week, The Arkells released a new song entitled ‘You Can Get It’, which is a collaboration with American pop-rock artist K-Flay (known for the tune ‘Blood in the Cut’).

The new single comes on the heels of a busy 2020 for the band which saw them actively engaging with fans during the early days of the pandemic via social media for virtual music lessons.

They also released their acoustic Campfire Chords album last summer and made band history with the release of their first-ever holiday song ‘Pub Crawl.’

Any campaign to raise money for the purchase of the Arkell Street home would have to be rather robust given the steep increase in housing prices in Hamilton recently.

Another house currently up for sale on the block has a jaw-dropping asking price of $838,000 and offers the same number of beds and baths as its historic Hamilton neighbour.

According to a report by the Realtors Association of Hamilton-Burlington (RAHB), the average price for residential properties in Hamilton last month was $848,719 which was up 7.7 per cent from last month and up 29.5 per cent from February 2020.

In the last several months, homes have been selling well over asking as the market has seen a demand that far outstrips inventory.
