Toast opened back in 2016 on John North in one of the lovely historic buildings along the street.

What has consistently set them apart from other bars and restaurants though was the fun they had with their service and the food and drinks they served.

The Toast team hosted a number of theme nights, live music event, workshops, psychic readings, trivia nights and so much more that made them a hub of community activity.

They consistently supported other local businesses, including a number of breweries, wineries and food suppliers.

“Your support has meant the world to us and we are saddened that you’ll no longer be seated at our tables,” Toast’s Instagram post laments.

“If you’re looking for your Toast fix we will be open for take out until the end of June.”

Recently, InTheHammer featured Toast in its Top 5 take out cocktails kits, so you might want to indulge in their Ruby Soho while you still can.

While they haven’t disclosed the reason behind the decision to close, the last few months were likely a major contributor.

At last week’s meeting of the Mayor’s Task Force on Economic recovery, a report from the city’s Economic Development department found that a large majority of local restaurants are reporting that revenues are down more than 50 per cent since e the onset of the pandemic.

The data for the report was collected through a survey of local businesses conducted back in April.

One thing is for sure, Toast will be greatly missed: there has been an outpouring of support for them since they announced their closure a couple of hours ago.

Judging from the tone of their Instagram post, though, maybe we’ll see the proprietors around again sometime…?

“It’s been a pleasure to be a part of this wonderful community of restaurants and businesses in Hamilton,” they say.

“Here’s to all of you and to what comes next.”
