Another step in the GO Transit expansion is nearing completion.

Another step in the GO Transit expansion is nearing completion.

As the John Street bridge is closer to reopening in the coming weeks, Metrolinx posted a time-lapse video of a portion of the bridge’s rebuilding on Wednesday (Nov. 6).

The video is part of the Crown agency’s initiative to keep the community abreast of the development happening along the GO Transit lines to improve service to and from the West Harbour station and later, to and from Confederation station.

“The John Street Bridge spans over the corridor just east of West Harbour GO Station and Liuna Station, and is one of many important connections between residential neighbourhoods that are separated by the railway,” a Metrolinx blog post says.

“It connects the North End and Beasley neighbourhoods, which make up part of the downtown and Bayfront areas of Hamilton’s lower city.”

As GO Train service expands in the coming years, the addition of another track was mandatory and the John Street bridge, which was nearing the end of its lifecycle, according to the blog post, needed to be rebuilt to make room for the new track.

The replacement of the bridge has been carried out in partnership between CN, the City of Hamilton and Metrolinx.

“The new design includes a completely new bridge structure with new abutments, four new spans made up of 11 individual pre-cast concrete girders, new approach slabs, road surface infrastructure, sidewalks and landscaping,” Metrolinx says.

The bridge has been closed since early this year and the City’s website has set November 29 as the day for its reopening.
