In an effort to accommodate the return to school and work, Metrolinx announced on Monday (August 17) that they would be resuming some GO Transit services that will impact Hamilton commuters.

Starting September 5, the transit provider will be beefing up service between Hamilton and Toronto by adding a couple of runs during weekday rush hours from West Harbour GO Station.

“Weekday train service will return to West Harbour GO Station,” a Metrolinx notice says.

It notes that there will be two morning eastbound trips from West Harbour GO at 6:13 and 7:13 a.m., arriving at Union Station at 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. and two afternoon westbound trips will depart Union Station at 4:45 and 5:45 p.m. and arrive at West Harbour GO at 6:03 and 7:03 p.m.

No changes to the QEW express bus from Hamilton’s GO Centre to Union Station have been announced, so far. That service has been scaled back to one trip a day due to COVID-19.

GO Transit service on other busy lines will be ramped in the coming weeks as well, the transit provider said Monday.

“All combined, the schedule adjustments – including the return of some services suspended in the wake of COVID-19, and impacts to bus routes – are the largest shift to service in GO Transit’s history,” a Metrolinx press release says.

“The service changes will provide more options for everyone from essential workers to tradespeople to those who work in downtown office buildings to get where they need to go more conveniently.”

GO Transit has introduced a number of new protocols on their trains, buses and in their stations to help protect against the spread of COVID-19.

Non-medical face coverings are mandatory on GO vehicles and hand sanitizer will be readily available for riders.

To avoid lineups at stations, Metrolinx encourages their ridership to load money onto PRESTO cards using the app, or to buy tickets online.

“We’re keeping an eye on customer levels and continue to make adjustments to the length of our trains to match demand while using our resources efficiently,” Metrolinx says.
