Former NaRoma Pizza location on Locke Street has a new owner and tenant

When NaRoma Pizza permanently closed its doors in October of 2019 after 8 years of operation, it left one of Locke Street’s more desired properties without a primary tenant.

It took until December of 2020 for the doors at 215 Locke to reopen and for those doors to get a fresh set of window decals.

Modern Design Studio, which purchased the property outright, will operate in two parts: design (residential and commercial interior design services) and experience (private events and workshops).

The main space, which used to smell of fresh pizza dough and marina sauce, will soon operate as an interior design showroom while also serving as an event space.

Modern Design Studio will also be looking to rent out its patio space.

The Hamilton-born and bred company was operating at Ancaster Business Park but realized that if they wanted to expand their services into running events, they needed to be closer to where the action is.

“[Ancaster] was just so far away from the action,” Bella Dietrich, Managing Director for Modern Design Studio told Inthehammer.com. “We wanted to be more centralized so it just made sense for us to relocate.”

Bella and her sister, Dao, as well as the entire Modern Design Studio team, grew up in the Hamilton-area. They have some very ambitious plans to try and bridge that gap between old and new in the city.

“Whenever we think about going somewhere fun, why is it that we have to think about Toronto?” asked Bella. “We want people to think of Hamilton, instead.”

Modern Studio Design has been in talks with the City about using underutilized space for trendy market places and pop-up events.

They’re also working on partnerships with Mohawk College and McMaster University with a focus on young entrepreneurs.
