A new fundraiser in support of a refugee family who recently made Hamilton home offers a delicious way to support the new arrivals and four popular local restaurants.
The fundraiser, organized by the Church of St John the Evangelist at Locke and Charlton, is a restaurant take-out program called ‘Just Dinner – Dine for a Just Cause.’
“Every Wednesday in May will feature one of the four restaurants offering two meal options (meat and vegetarian),” a press release said.
Each meal will cost $40, with $10 from each purchase going directly to support the settlement needs of a refugee family who settled in the city in late 2020. Each meal feeds one.
The four participating restaurants are:
- Souvelocke Greek Taverna (May 5)
- Westown Bar & Grill (May 12)
- Tomah: A Taste of Syria (May 19)
- Brux House Craft Beer & Kitchen (May 26)
The family, an Iranian mother and her two daughters, arrived in Canada in September 2020 and were among the first refugees allowed here after a six-month COVID-19-related suspension on immigration.
The family’s first year in the country is being privately sponsored and supported by a group of volunteers from St John the Evangelist, as well as community members who are helping to organize housing and connecting the family to health care and language classes.
In December 2020, the church hosted a virtual art auction that featured more than 50 pieces donated from local artists to support the family of three.
The menus for Just Dinner are already posted and can be purchased ahead of time. Participants will have to pick up between the hours of 4 and 7 p.m. on the designated Wednesday.
Timing is staggered to keep people separate.
After meals are purchased, restaurants will be in contact to schedule a time for pick up.
To check out the menus and to place orders, visit the fundraiser’s website. Orders are due one week before the designated pick-up day.
