Five Hamilton men are facing charges in a four-week project focused on online child exploitation, police announced Thursday.

The Hamilton Police Service’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit executed eight raids and 22 other “judicial orders” across the city in April.

Hamilton police said they seized 62 computers and electronic devices which contained “over 8,000 images and videos of child sexual abuse and exploitation material”.

“With a large number of people being isolated at home currently, they are spending more time online,” said Hamilton Police.

“The individuals who would be accessing and sharing child sexual abuse material now have more of an opportunity than ever. During these unprecedented times, it is essential that the police continue to aggressively pursue these individuals online who are using technology to exploit our children and share child sexual abuse and exploitation material.”

Five men between the ages of 18 and 41 were arrested.

Police said they are not believed to be known to one another.

Two other men, a 28-year-old and a 34-year-old, also face child pornography charges. However, their names are under a publication ban.
