A fourth case of COVID-19 connected to McMaster University has been confirmed, the school reported Sunday (Oct. 4).

According to an update posted to Mac’s website, an employee of the university who was last on campus on September 29th and spent time in the Life Sciences Building, tested positive for the virus.

Since Sept. 29, the school says the building has been cleaned several times but was scheduled to undergo another thorough cleaning Sunday.

“The employee had been approved to be in the building and followed all required health and safety protocols while on campus and we thank them for their diligence,” the update said.

This is the fourth confirmed case connected to Mac since the start of the school year. Last week, it was confirmed that a student, who was last on campus September 24, had tested positive.

While the majority of university courses are being offered online, access to the campus is still necessary for some students and staff, who are required to screen daily for COVID-19 symptoms.

As part of the university’s COVID-19 protocols, when they are notified that someone is awaiting test results and has been on campus, the areas where the person had been on campus in the past 72 hours are cleaned out of an abundance of caution.

“If a test result is later confirmed, additional cleaning may also occur out of an abundance of caution,” Mac’s website says.

However, in the majority of cases, the test results have been negative.
