East Hamilton parking lot altercation leads to attempted murder charge: police

Hamilton Police say a man is facing attempted murder charges after an altercation in an East End parking lot left another man with serious injuries.

Initially, the 26-year-old suspect had been charged with aggravated assault, but early Friday (June12) police said those charges had been upgraded.

On Saturday, May 30, 2020, shortly before 9:00 p.m., police say an altercation occurred between two men in the Bottoms Up Bar & Grill parking lot on Barton Street East.

A 32-year-old man received serious injuries to his face and neck by a knife.

The assailant fled the scene on foot but was located several blocks away by uniform officers.

At this time he was arrested and charged with aggravated assault, weapons offences and breach of probation.

The victim was transported to the hospital in serious condition.

On Monday, June 8, 2020, police say they received further evidence that resulted in the case being transferred to the Hamilton Police Major Crime Unit.

The accused, 26-year-old Jesse Patey of no fixed address. appeared in court by video on Tuesday (June 9) and was charged with attempted murder. Police say he remains in custody.

On June 10th and 11th the City of Hamilton Public Works assisted police by recovering the weapon in a sewer area close to where the altercation took place.

Patey is facing the following charges:

  • Attempt Murder
  • Assault – Aggravated
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose
  • Fail to Comply with Probation x2
  • Assault – Weapon
  • Utter Threat to Cause Death or Bodily Harm
