Ever wonder what is the point of those signs that tell you how fast you’re going?
Well, wonder no more. Inthehammer has gotten to the bottom of it and it turns out they’re kinda cool.

Dynamic speed signs were introduced to Hamilton to act as a visual reminder to motorists to mind their speed. The signs function, the city says, as an educational tool for residents and motorists to raise awareness about motor vehicle speeds.
The signs and the data they collect are for informational purposes only and do not issue speeding tickets.
Hamilton residents can even access the data via the city’s website. There’s a map where you can click on the location of the sign you’re interested in and you can see for yourself the posted speed limit and what is the average speed drivers are travelling.
For example, when we tested the map, we clicked on Mountain Brow Boulevard, where the posted speed limit is 40 km/hr, and we discovered that the average speed cars are moving is 50 km/hr.
There are some places, though, that will raise some eyebrows as to the accuracy of the data.
The signs are solar-powered and you can even reach out the city’s Traffic Operations department to request one for your street. (Remember that episode of The Office where Michael and Dwight tried to clock their speed using one of these signs? That could be you!).
The signs have been tested and are to within +/- 4 km/h of the displayed speed, so there may be some differences between what the sign and your speedometer display shows.
