It’s well known that Hamilton is a fertile breeding ground for the arts and there is no shortage of talent to be found here in Steeltown.
Below, in no particular order, are five famous actors and actresses to have come out of the Hammer.
Kathleen Robertson
Robertson (pictured above) was born in Hamilton and attended Sherwood Secondary School and Hillfield Strathallan College, a local private school. She is best known for her roles as Tina Edison in the Canadian sitcom Maniac Mansion (1990–1993) and as Clare Arnold in Beverly Hills, 90210 (1994–1997). Robertson also starred in a number of films, and from 2011 to 2012 played the role of Kitty O’Neill in the political drama series Boss. From 2014 to 2016, Robertson starred as homicide detective Hildy Mulligan in the TNT series Murder in the First. In 2019, she played a main character in the series Northern Rescue with William Baldwin.
Julia Arthur
Julia Arthur started out in life as Ida Lewis in Hamilton, born to Irish and Welsh parents in May 1869 (or 1868). She was the fifth of 16 children. Arthur’s professional debut took place in her hometown at the Grand Theatre on 26 March 1885 when she played Maritana the ballad singer in Don Caesar de Bazan. In the years that followed, she appeared on stages across Europe and North America and really gained notoriety in New York in the early 1890s. Movies were born in 1895, and like so many stage actors since, the lure of performing for the camera was just too great. Julia Arthur appeared in a handful of films, beginning in 1908.
Eugene Levy

Eugene Levy was born in Hamilton in 1946. He attended Westdale Secondary School and McMaster University. Eugene Levy is an award-winning actor, writer, and producer. He has appeared in more than 60 motion pictures to date, eight of which having topped the $100M mark. He is perhaps best known for his work alongside filmmaker Christopher Guest in films like Best in Show and Waiting for Guffman.
Dominic Zamprogna
Zamprogna was born in Hamilton. His parents operated a dance school and his father, Lou Zamprogna (who appeared in the movie productions of Fiddler on the Roof and Man of La Mancha in the early 1970s), was a dancer, choreographer, and ran an acting school at Theatre Aquarius. Dominic is perhaps best known for his roles on television series Edgemont, Battlestar Galactica and General Hospital. Very early in his career he scored roles on Are You Afraid of the Dark? and F/X2.
Luke Kirby
Luke Kirby was born in Hamilton in 1978. He is an actor, known for Take This Waltz (2011), Halloween: Resurrection (2002) and Mambo Italiano (2003). Most recently, Kirby nabbed an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of 1950s American standup comic Lenny Bruce in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Honourable mentions:
Martin Short, born in 1950 in Hamilton, needs little introduction as he is one of Canada’s most iconic comedians. He too attended Westdale High School and McMaster University.
Jason Jones, who was a correspondent on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart and starred in his own show on TBS called The Detour.
