COVID-19: Two Hamilton outbreaks add more cases

Two active outbreaks in Hamilton are seeing an increase in the number of positive COVID-19 cases associated with them on Wednesday (Oct. 28).
There are now 18 cases — eight residents and 10 staff members — at Chartwell Willowgrove Long-Term Care residence in Ancaster as the number of cases connected to an outbreak at an unnamed basketball club is up by one to six.
Also on Wednesday, an outbreak was declared at St. Marguerite d’Youville Catholic Elementary School on the mountain after two students in the same cohort tested positive for COVID-19.
On Tuesday, the city’s worst COVID-19 outbreak at SpinCo Hamilton was finally declared over after 85 people contracted the virus.
The number of active outbreaks in the community at the moment is nine.
Hamilton’s Public Health Services (PHS) is reporting 33 newly confirmed coronavirus cases in the community on Wednesday, bring the total number of cases to 1,738.

Of that total, there have been 48 deaths and 1,521 cases resolved, accounting for approximately 88 per cent of all cases.
According to PHS data reported in the CIty of Hamilton’s website, it is believed that there are 169 active cases in the community at the moment.
As of Wednesday, Hamilton’s assessment centres have completed 103,959 COVID-19 tests.
Twenty-four per cent of cases confirmed locally in the last 10 days are in the 20 to 29 age group, while 17 per cent are among the 50 to 59 age group.
New Ontario modelling coming soon
Meanwhile, Ontario reported 834 new cases of COVID-19 Wednesday and five new deaths due to the virus.
While the numbers continue to hover in the 800 to 900 cases a day range, Premier Doug Ford said that new modelling, which is expected to be unveiled on Thursday (Oct. 29), shows some improvement in how the second wave of the pandemic is playing out in the province.
Health Minister Christine Elliott said on Wednesday that 299 cases are in Toronto, 186 in Peel Region, 121 in York Region, and 76 in Ottawa.
The province says 312 people are currently in hospital with COVID-19, including 71 in intensive care. Of those, 51 are on a ventilator.
It says another 773 cases are now considered resolved, and 30,010 tests have been completed since the last daily report.
The latest figures bring the total of COVID-19 cases in Ontario to 72,885, which includes 3,108 deaths, and 62,303 cases resolved.
