The outbreak at SpinCo Hamilton has been declared over after more than 80 people were confirmed to have contracted the virus through direct contact with the fitness club or one of its patrons.

There were 54 primary COVID-19 cases connected to the outbreak and 31 secondary cases.

An outbreak is declared over 14 days from when the last primary case is confirmed, according to a spokesperson from Hamilton’s Public Health Services (PHS).

This has been the worst COVID-19 outbreak in Hamilton since the virus was first reported here in March. It has made headlines across the globe and has forced public health experts to consider the role gyms and recreational facilities play in spreading the virus.

Meanwhile, the outbreak at Chartwell Willowgrove Long-Term Care Residence in Ancaster, which was declared late last week, has worsened, after seven residents have contracted the virus and eight staff members.

There are currently nine active outbreaks in Hamilton, which is down from 10 on Monday.

New cases down

On Tuesday (Oct. 27), PHS reported just seven newly confirmed cases of the virus in the community, bringing the city’s total case count to 1,705.

The number of resolved cases is up to 1,512, accounting for approximately 89 per cent of local cases.

The city’s COVID-19-related death toll remains 48.

According to PHS data shared on the City of Hamilton’s website, there is believed to be 141 active cases of the virus in the community at the moment.

To date, 103,959 COVID-19 tests have been completed at Hamilton’s assessment centres.
