The number of active outbreaks in Hamilton is up to 16 after an outbreak among members of a ‘Hamilton-based basketball club’ tested positive as well as a staff member at a long-term care home.

On Friday (Oct. 23), Hamilton’s Public Health Services (PHS) listed the club and Chartwell Willowgrove LTC in Ancaster as having an outbreak. Four people connected to the club are listed as having the virus.

InTheHammer reached out PHS for information on the outbreak at the basketball club but declined to provide further information for “privacy reasons.”

A PHS spokesperson said, though, that “there is no risk to the public.”

This comes as the outbreak at SpinCo Hamilton continues to spread among members of the public.

According to local reports, more than 80 people have contracted the virus in connection to the outbreak.

Today’s local numbers

As of Friday, there have been 1,631 cases in Hamilton since March, which is 15 more confirmed cases since Thursday.

The number of resolved cases is continuing to climb to 1,429, which accounts for approximately 88 per cent of overall local cases.

PHS is not reporting any new COVID-19 related deaths Friday, so the death toll remains 48. The city’s latest victim to the virus, a man in his late 70s, passed away in hospital earlier this week.

According to the data on the City’s COVID-19 site, it is believed there are 152 active cases in the community at the moment.

Hamilton’s assessment centres have completed 101,124 tests to date, as the city’s newest testing centre at Mohawk College came online Friday.

Ontario update

Meanwhile, Ontario is reporting 826 new cases of COVID-19 Friday, and nine new deaths due to the virus.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says 292 cases are in Toronto, 186 in Peel Region, 87 in Ottawa, and 72 in York Region.

The province says it has conducted 40,019 tests since the last daily report, with another 35,436 being processed.

In total, 276 people are hospitalized in Ontario due to COVID-19, including 78 in intensive care.
