COVID-19 outbreak declared at East Hamilton school

An outbreak of COVID-19 at a Hamilton elementary school was declared Wednesday (Dec. 2) after two staff members have tested positive for the virus.
In a notice to families of the Sir Wilfred Laurier school community sent Wednesday, it notes that the affected staff members did not “provide direct instruction” to students and no classes have been directly impacted.
The school, located in Hamilton’s East End, remains open to staff and students.
“HWDSB and our school are working closely with Public Health to ensure appropriate measures are in place to prevent the spread of illness to other students or people in the school community,” the notice, signed by the school’s principal, Greg Moore, said.
“Please continue to have your child attend school unless of course you are a close contact and directed otherwise by HPHS.”
This is the second outbreak declared at a local elementary school this week. On Monday (Nov. 30), PHS declared one at Adelaide Hoodless Elementary in central Hamilton after two staff members tested positive.

According to COVID-19 Guidance: School Outbreak Management, an outbreak in a school is defined as two or more lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases in students and/or staff (or other visitors) in a school with an epidemiological link, within a 14-day period, where at least one case could have reasonably acquired their infection in the school (including transportation and before/after school care).
According to data shared on the province’s COVID-19 website, there are 44 confirmed cases of COVID-19 among staff and students at 30 schools across Hamilton.
