COVID-19: Hamilton reports record number of deaths, new cases

Hamilton’s COVID-19-related death toll climbed to 92 on Tuesday (Dec. 1) after Public Health Services (PHS) reported the deaths of six seniors in long-term care homes.

According to a spokesperson from PHS the latest deaths were four men and two women who died between Saturday and Monday.

A man in his late 80s from Hamilton Continuing Care, a woman in her mid-80s from Chartwell Willowgrove LTC and a man in his late 70s from Baywoods Place died on Saturday (Nov. 28).

Another resident of Willowgrove, a man in his 90s, as well as a woman in her late 80s who was a resident of Grace Villa passed away on Sunday (Nov. 29).

And on Monday (Nov. 30), a man in his early 90s who was a resident of St. Joseph’s Villa died.

This is the largest reported single-day increase in the number of local COVID-19-related deaths since the start of the pandemic.

Tuesday also sets a new record for the number of newly reported cases of COVID-19: PHS data shows there are 108 new cases, bringing the total to 3,266.

The number of active cases in the community is also at an all-time high at 565.

There have been approximately 80 per cent of local cases (2,598) that have been resolved.

An outbreak of the virus has been declared at Adelaide Hoodless Elementary School after two staff members have tested positive for COVID-19. The school remains open and PHS is currently helping the school address the outbreak.

This outbreak brings the total number of active outbreaks in the community to 19.

According to data shared on the province’s COVID-19 website, there are 32 reported cases among staff and students at 24 schools across the city.

There have been 134,122 COVID-19 tests completed at at local assessment centres as an additional 25,337 COVID-19 tests have been completed at other facilities.

Hamilton hospitals are currently treating 23 people for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, Ontario is reporting 1,707 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, and seven new deaths due to the virus.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says 727 new cases are in Toronto, 373 in Peel Region, and 168 cases in York Region.
