Hamilton is reporting 45 newly confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday (May 25) and no new deaths associated with the virus.

According to Public Health Services’ data posted to the City of Hamilton website, this is the lowest single-day increase in the number of new cases since early March.

Over the Victoria Day long weekend, however, Hamilton marked a grim milestone when the total number of the city’s cases since the start of the pandemic surpassed 20,000, but again, with only 227 newly confirmed cases over the three days, numbers suggest the third wave of the virus may be in its waning days.

There are currently 796 active cases of the virus in the community and 41 active outbreaks across the city and the local death toll is up to 378.

Hamilton hospitals are treating 98 people for the virus presently.

As of Tuesday, 290,316 COVID-19 vaccines have been administered locally, with 56.9 per cent of eligible Hamiltonians having received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose.

The city’s goal is to vaccinate at least 75 per cent of eligible individuals in the community.

Ontario is reporting 1,039 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday and 1,446 new cases on Monday (the Ministry of Health did not release its daily report on the Victoria Day holiday).

Tuesday’s new case count is the lowest since March 16, when Ontario reported 1,074 new cases.

The province is logging eight deaths from the virus on Sunday and 33 on Monday.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says 325 of Tuesday’s new cases are in Toronto, 231 in Peel Region and 77 in York Region.

Provincial data show 1,025 people are in hospital because of COVID-19, but the government says more than 10 per cent of hospitals did not submit data.

The province says 692 people are in intensive care because of COVID-19 and 498 are on a ventilator.
