COVID-19: Hamilton fitness studio outbreak up to 11 cases as province hits new record

The City of Hamilton’s COVID-19 data shows that now 11 people — 10 patrons and one staff member at SpinCo Hamilton on James North — have tested positive for the virus.

Earlier this week, the fitness studio closed voluntarily when a staff member and two patrons tested positive.

As of Thursday, there have been 1,268 cases of COVID-19 in Hamilton since it was first reported here in March.

That is 24 newly confirmed cases of the virus since Wednesday’s data was updated.

The number of resolved cases locally is up to 1,099, accounting for approximately 87 per cent of total cases, while the city’s death toll is 47.

According to the city’s data, there is believed to be 122 known active cases of the virus in the community at the moment.

Meanwhile, Ontario is reporting 797 new COVID-19 cases Thursday, marking a new daily high. The previous record was set just last week.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says 265 cases are in Toronto, 182 in Ottawa, 134 in Peel Region and 78 in York Region.

The province says there are four new deaths reported due to the virus Thursday.

It also reported 100 new COVID-19 cases related to schools, including at least 51 among students.

In Hamilton, three new school-related cases were reported Wednesday after a staff member St. Thomas the Apostle Elementary in Waterdown tested positive, as well as a staff member at Frank Panabaker Elementary School (North Campus) in Ancaster and a student at Huntington Park Elementary School on the East Mountain.

The number of schools with a reported case is up to 415 out of Ontario’s 4,828 publicly funded schools.

The province says it has a backlog of 58,118 tests and has conducted 48,488 tests since the last daily report.

To date, Hamilton assessment centres have carried out 86,427 COVID-19 tests.

In total, 206 people are hospitalized in Ontario due to COVID-19, including 47 in intensive care.

The latest figures bring the total of COVID-19 cases in Ontario to 56,742, with 2,992 deaths, and 48,308 cases resolved.
