COVID-19: Four new outbreaks declared across Hamilton

Hamilton’s Public Health Services (PHS) has declared four new outbreaks of COVID-19 at locations across the city on Wednesday (Oct. 21).

St. Joseph’s Villa in Dundas is reporting one staff member has a confirmed case of COVID-19, while ArcelorMittal in the city’s East End is reporting two cases among staff, Footlocker at Lime Ridge is also reporting two cases as is Flynn Canada, a roofing company in Stoney Creek.

Meanwhile, the outbreak at Shannen Koostachin Elementary School in Upper Stoney Creek, which was declared on October 13 after two staff members tested positive for COVID-19, has been declared over.

This brings the total number of active outbreaks in the community to 14.

As of Wednesday, the City of Hamilton’s COVID-19 website is reporting that there have been 1,585 cases of COVID-19 in the community since March.

This is 26 newly confirmed cases since Tuesday. The local COVID-19-related death toll is 47.

The number of resolved cases is up to 1,386, accounting for approximately 87 per cent of overall cases.

According to the website, there is believed to be 150 active cases of the virus in the community at the moment.

To date, 99,347 COVID-19 tests have been completed at Hamilton’s assessment centres.

According to the city’s data, the majority of newly confirmed cases in the last 10 days is in people under the age of 40.

Meanwhile, Ontario is reporting 790 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, and nine new deaths due to the virus.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says 321 of the new cases are in Toronto, 157 are in Peel Region, 76 are in York Region and 57 are in Ottawa.

The province says it has conducted 32,646 tests since the last daily report, with another 29,332 being processed.

In total, 260 people are hospitalized in Ontario due to COVID-19, including 71 in intensive care.
