Coffin filled with roses, naloxone kits left outside Hamilton mayor’s home: Police

Hamilton Police say they are investigating after a coffin filled with roses and naloxone kits was left outside Mayor Fred Eisenberger’s home Monday night (Nov. 30).
Shortly after 9:30 p.m., police say they responded to reports of a suspicious incident at a residential survey in the area of King Street East and the Red Hill Valley Parkway.
“Once on scene, officers noted a coffin filled with roses, accompanying plants and naloxone kits had been left in front of the mayor’s residence,” police said in a press release issued Tuesday morning (Dec. 1).
“The area was secured as police confirmed the safety of area residents, identified witnesses and searched for suspects.”
Detectives from the East End Station Criminal Investigations Branch continue to investigate the incident and say those responsible for the incident to be connected to the Defund Police movement.

There was a police presence in the area overnight, which is expected to continue throughout the day on Tuesday.
The incident comes the same day that bylaw officers removed tents and structures from a peaceful protest that had been staged out in front of Hamilton City Hall for more than a week.
The protest is calling for the Hamilton Police Service budget of $171-million to be slashed by 50 per cent and the removed funds allocated to free and affordable housing
