The city will be hosting a candlelight vigil for the victim of the fatal assault that took place outside of Churchill Secondary School in Hamilton.

Earlier today, police confirmed Devan Selvey, a 14-year-old Churchill student, was stabbed to death outside of the school Monday afternoon. His mother was present at the time of the assault.

The “Candlelight Vigil Against Bullying, Jealousy, Hatefulness and for Love & Peace” will be held in memory of Selvey on October 9 from 6:30 to 8 pm. The vigil will be held in front of Sir Winston Churchill School, where the boy attended and the assault took place.

“This will be a peaceful memorial and time of solidarity. Everyone with love in their hearts is invited and will be welcomed,” says Keven Ellis, founder of the 999th Legion for Child’s Rights. “We must come together at this time of grief as a community to show solidarity with the families and in support of all our children being bullied all over Canada.”

Residents are being advised to bring their candles and take them home after the vigil.

According to Hamilton Police, two teens, a 14 and 18-year-old, have been charged with first-degree murder while three more teens were arrested on Tuesday afternoon. The suspects were all students, whether former or current, at Churchill.
