Local police have come under heavy criticism from residents for its response — or lack thereof — regarding excessive speed and noise on Hamilton streets, the Hamilton Police Service announced “Project Drag Strip 8” Friday (Sept, 25).

Police say they will initially target Hwy 8 from Centennial Prkwy to Fifty Road before moving “across the city as required”.

Hamilton police say they’ve handed out 133 stunt driving tickets since January 2020 — compared to 80 in all of 2019.

The initiative announcement comes less than a week after a gathering of hundreds of “street-style” cars attended the movie theatre parking lot in the Meadowlands for “Mega Meet 2.0”.

Police took criticism from members of the public who claim their concerns involving dangerous vehicle-operating have gone largely unaddressed.
