While there are a number of closures across Hamilton this Family Day, there’s still plenty to do with your clan if you’re up for it.

While there are a number of closures across Hamilton this Family Day, there’s still plenty to do with your clan if you’re up for it.

Here are 5 things you and your family can do on the holiday Monday in Hamilton.

5. Get Active
There are arenas across the city offering special family skates on the 17th. Also, the rink down at Bayfront Park (if the weather is favourable) is a great spot to skate with friends and family. For more information on times and locations, check the city’s website here. Also, there are some recreation centres that are hosting family swims and open gyms. For more information on those, please visit the city’s website here.

4. Take in a movie
The theatres are open and there are some great features on the big screen so why not take in a film and chow down on some popcorn and candy with your loved ones? Our local independently owned cinemas are also screening some pretty special Family Day films. At The Westdale, E.T. is playing, along with The Last Black Man Standing in San Francisco presented by the Hamilton Centre for Civic Inclusion. At the Playhouse Cinema, The Labyrinth (with David Bowie!) is screening in the afternoon.

3. Soak up some culture
A number of Hamilton museums are opening their doors for families on Monday with special programming. The Hamilton Children’s Museum, Dundurn Castle, Battlefield House, Fieldcote, Whitehearn and the Museum of Steam and Technology all have special events planned for Family Day. Also, the Hamilton Public Library’s Central location and Turner Park branch have special events planned.

2. Bowling

This is a wonderful way to spend time with your family. It’s fun, kinda physical, sometimes challenging and it gets you out of the house! Splitsville in Upper Stoney Creek, University Lanes in Dundas and Mountain Lanes on the central mountain are all open for Family Day. Splitsville even has a door crashers special for the first 34 people through the doors (which open at 9 a.m.)

1. Catch the Bulldogs in action

The Hamilton Bulldogs are playing a special Family Day game on Monday afternoon. The Kitchener Rangers come to town to take on the Bulldogs in a game sponsored by Liuna. There will be giveaways, including a chance to win round-trip airfare for four people from Hamilton to Orlando, Fla. With the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Bulldogs in Hamilton, now might be a good time to catch them in action and show your love for the team.
