20 charges laid as 400 people attend anti-lockdown, anti-mask weekend protests: Hamilton Police

It was a busy weekend for local police and by-law enforcement.

On Saturday (Apr. 17) an anti-lockdown protest took place in the area of Kenilworth Ave and Barton St. with over 400 in attendance, according to the Hamilton Police Service (HPS).

One man was involved in an incident that involved a maskless confrontation with employees at a Tim Hortons. Footage of the incident has been received by police.

Further, on Sunday (Apr. 18) a Hugs Over Masks event took place in the area of Bay and Main St. with over 45 reportedly in attendance.

According to police, “the majority of individuals were not wearing a mask or face covering” at these events — which exceeded the number of attendees permitted for an outdoor gathering.

Police say both organizers were identified.

The protests were in response to the Ontario government announcing more restrictions as the COVID-19 pandemic overwhelms the provincial health-care system.

Hamilton Police continue to investigate these events and encourage anyone with information to call 905-546-4925.
