Several orders for unsafe work conditions have recently been issued at the Maplehurst Correctional Complex in Milton by the Ministry of Labour.

In a statement to inhalton.com, a spokesperson from the Ministry of Solicitor General confirmed they are aware that the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development has issued workplace orders for the Maplehurst Correctional Complex.

“Protecting the health and safety of correctional services staff and those in provincial custody is the ministry’s top priority,” read the statement.

According to the statement, over the last several months, the ministry has made important operational changes across all provincial correctional facilities.

These changes include the screening and testing of all newly admitted inmates, with their consent and housing all newly admitted inmates in a separate area from the general population for 14 days.

Additionally, they include providing masks to inmates, if required, providing personal protective equipment (PPE) to all staff and requiring all staff to wear a mask and appropriate eye protection at all times while at the facility.

Visitors are required to wear masks at all times while at the facility and are required to have temperature checks along with the staff.

Increased cleaning measures are also in effect as well as working with local public health units to test inmates and staff as appropriate.

The statement also confirmed that any inmate that tests positive for COVID-19 is placed under droplet precautions and is isolated from the rest of the inmate population while they receive appropriate medical care.

“The ministry continues to work with staff at Maplehurst Correctional Complex to address the MLTSD orders to ensure the appropriate use of PPE, management of common materials and spaces and enhanced cleaning protocols are in place,” read the statement.

“The ministry continues to reinforce the important role that workplace safety measures including handwashing, wearing PPE and physical distancing have in preventing the spread of COVID-19 in the workplace.”
