The very best poutine you’ll find is in Quebec, obviously, but we’re a six-hour drive (or one-hour flight) away and in Oakville there are some interesting spins on the classic Canadian comfort food. Poutine is one of the dishes I will insist on eating sooner than later because soggy fries are an absolute travesty. The basics include fries, gravy, and cheese curds (life hack: everyone in Ottawa, businesses included, uses St. Albert’s cheese,!). Add beef, sub in duck, toss in some east Asian ingredients, and do whatever you want to make it your own. The good folks at Boon Burger prove you don’t necessarily need meat to create a satisfying poutine. The oh-so-trendy Pulled Jackfruit Poutine – hand-cut yukon gold fries are baked, topped with smoky jerk, pulled jackfruit, coleslaw, yams, vegan cheese then sprinked with green onions and sesame seeds. It’s healthy and doesn’t blow up your calorie expenditure for the day. This Canadian chain, or “world’s first vegan burger cafe,” has mastered selling plant-based junk food for the masses. Boon Burger’s got jackfruit in at least two of its dishes: the Jamaican Me Crazy burger also offer is up. If you’re unfamiliar with Asian food, jackfruit is a nutrient-dense miracle food of sorts traced back to India. It also makes a perfect stand-in for pork (especially for the vegans in your life and those who choose to go plant-based from time to time). You can shred it and douse it in BBQ sauce … Good luck noticing the difference when you’re ravenous on #legday after 20 minutes of walking lunges and Bulgarian split squats!

Essentially everything on the menu at the Gingerman is fantastic, including their poutine. The hand-cut Yukon gold fries are served with Montreal cheese curds and peppercorn beef gravy. And you can add a variety of meat, including jerked pulled beef, Cajun shaved chicken, maple pulled pork, or Montreal smoked meat. (Hopefully the cranky old guy who runs my gym doesn’t read this … or it will probably be death by burpee). Chase your meal with a glass of their hand-picked wine selection if you fancy vino, or be cool like me and order a whisky sour. The Kerr Village gem offers a great atmosphere with tons of wood and natural light, and is also known for its blue goose quesadilla, lettuce wraps, and salads.

Too many Oakville and Burlington peeps at my gym rave about Tin Cup Sports Grill (there are locations in both places), so we finally folded and tried the Braised Beef Poutine. it’s got cheese curds, mozzarella, crispy onion straws and peppercorn gravy. It doesn’t exactly look pretty but it tastes really good. While you’re there, order the Tin Cup Nachos, which have thick, juicy slices of real chicken breast that’s tender and generously distributed. Once you’re full on meat, dig into the grilled bell peppers and onions, smoked cheddar, and queso cheese sauce. We also loved the Sesame Chicken Bowl – yum! This North Service Rd. bar is a legit spot families looking for a post-soccer practice meal and for late-night eats, regardless of whether you’re there to watch the big game. If you haven’t been, you must go and get the poutine.
Must-try: Braised Beef Poutine ($13.75)
This casual dining option opened on May 3, 2017, and man, are they ever crushing it with their next-level sandwich, poutine, milkshake, and french fry game! The menu at this gourmet shop combines classic braising techniques with unconventional flavours. It offers up six sandwich options, including top sellers such as BBQ Pulled Pork, Beef + Kimchi, and Karaage (Japanese fried chicken), which are finished on the flat top. There’s also poutine, fresh cut fries, and milkshakes. Items are made fresh to order. But all you need to try is the Beef + Kimchi sandwich. Alongside the obvious ingredients, it’s got spicy bap sauce, sweet soy, and fresh scallions. Served on a French bun (that’s ridiculously delicous, one bite in!), it’s a serious flavour party in my mouth. It arrives on a cute little stainless steel serving tray. The sandwich looks and tastes spectacular. Same goes for the similar-yet-different- Kimchi Bap Poutine. (Their fries are the bomb). You’ll find the resto in the Fortino’s plaza at Dundas St. W. and Neyagawa Blvd. — look near the Hasty Market.
Best bet: Kimchi Bap Poutine ($6.25)
This Bronte Village restobar, south of Lakeshore Rd., absolutely blew us away with their Duck Poutine. It’s as fancy as they come: duck confit, foie gras gravy, and Quebec cheese curds. Unreal. While you’re there, you must order a pizza. The bread is freshly baked in-house and that salami … oh my. It just might be the best sliced meat I’ve ever tasted … Catch Hospitality Group (which owns a slew of the best restos in Oakville, including this one) knocked this one out of the proverbial ballpark. This casual resto-bar has a farm-fresh focus and sources locally when possible. Good luck scoring a table on a Friday night … it’s worth the wait. The beer selection rocks, and so does the chill vibe.
