Top 5 Places to Eat Near Sheridan College in Oakville

Published March 2, 2018 at 8:28 pm

Sheridan College students, your OSAP just came in and/or you’re learning how to stretch a dollar. In the rush to mentally prepare yourself for the real world and the ever-changing job market, you might have forgotten that school is fun and your campus is awesome. You have a ton of tasty and affordable food options within walking distance from your classroom, regardless of the semester, so now is the time to Eat All The Foods while your metabolism is still mighty and strong. (You also just might work in the area, too, and be in the market for a new lunch spot). Either way, here are the top five restaurants near Sheridan College in Oakville.

5. Habanero Taqueria

Established in 2012, Habanero Taqueria offers fresh Mexican cuisine, made to order. The resto is directly across from Sheridan in the Rabba plaza and they have vegan and vegetarian options available. Their most popular menu item is all about that beef — the Barbacoa Burrito ($8.75) comes with shredded &spiced slow-roasted beef. Fully loaded with Mexican rice, the burrito offers toppings of your choice, such as beans, corn, peppers, cabbage, mango hot sauce, guacamole and garlic-yogurt burrito sauce. Another popular item, chicken tacos, are marinated in adobo rub, then grilled and served in soft tacos. The trio goes for $9.75. My tacos were topped with shredded cheese, cabbage, diced tomatoes, green onions, jalapenos, sour cream, garlic yogurt, burrito sauce, and guacamole. Yum! Meals here are filling and if you’re like me, you’ll enjoy this for lunch so you can skip dinner.

Best bet: Burrito ($8.75)

Seating: Limited.

4. Osmow’s

A Streetsville staple since 2001, Osmow’s has expanded across the GTA and is proving to be an Oakville favourite, particularly among those who are in school. The Hays Blvd. location we visited has a student special for $6.68, which comes with shawarma, fries and a drink. A fully-loaded order of chicken shawarma from Osmow’s rarely disappoints, nor does the size of their ‘super’ sandwich. In true made-to-order fashion, it’s topped with chicken carved from the spit, and everything tastes perfectly seasoned. The garlic sauce is divine, along with the hot sauce. Everything is made in-house at this Middle Eastern chain. Remember to show your student card to get the deal!

Best bet: Student special ($6.68)

Seating: Yes.

3. On A Bun

The menu at this Hays Blvd. sandwich shop lists a wide variety of Italian sandwiches, including Veal, Chicken, Steak and Onions, Meatball, Sausage and Onions, Veggie, and Eggplant Parmesan. I’ve heard so much about this authentic family run Italian sandwich joint that I had to finally make a pit stop for a quick bite and see if it’s really “perfection on a bun.” Old-world Italian recipes and techniques are followed at this shop, where you’ll feel as though you’re at a family gathering, from the way you’re greeted to the way staff bid you farewell. The Veal sandwich is everything you’d expect it to be – greasy, meaty, made to order – and then some. Make sure you add cheese and mushrooms to take it up a notch! The Eggplant Parmesan is also outstanding. Service is phenomenal.

Best bet: Veal Sandwich ($7.99)

Seating: Limited.

2. Ritorno

Before you balk at the prices, consider this: you can only eat so much fast-food before you need a home-cooked meal or something remotely resembling Sunday dinner. (I’ve also advised my nephew, a college student, to spend his money on great food!!). This north-end Italian joint is owned by Julia Hanna, who also ran Ristorante Julia downtown. With a warm interior, the Oak Walk Dr. resto houses an adorable Nonna Wall, honouring women who fed and nurtured their families, the server explains. She recommends the veal and the gnocchi, made in-house by Julia’s mother. I started with the Calamari Fritti — the large portion of salty & crispy squid was coated with cornmeal then dusted with flour, served with a tasty cherry pepper basil aioli. The gnocchi, topped with Alla Vodka sauce and fresh greens, was soft and delicious, while the handbreaded veal parmigiana was thin, crispy, filling, and flavourful, served alongside spaghetti pomodoro. Ritorno means ‘to return’ and with comfort food like this, how could you not be back for more?

Best bet: Gnocchi (starts at $20)

Seating: Yes.

1. Monaghan’s Sports Pub & Grill

The wings are amazingly addictive at Monaghans, I’m told. “They’re all you can think about when you’re going to bed,” says the server (who was absolutely awesome). She’s onto something. They make some of their sauces here, and on deck were medium, tequila lime, and a delicious surprise sauce they were mixing for me. (I still have no idea what that sauce was but I was in a playful-yet-indecisive mood and appreciated staff humouring me). The breaded batter was crispy and kind of dark and fried. It was, indeed, delicious and … wait for it… addictive. No wonder they’ve been an Oakville favourite since 1979.

Best bet: A pound of wings ($11.99) with Tequila Lime sauce.

Seating: Plenty.
