Sushi-Ya Japan is a small restaurant serving up big taste in a prime location: downtown Milton. You’ll find it just off of Main St., along Martin. You’ll see men in suits, depending on the time of day, talking business over maki. Or there may be solo diners who need to get their sushi on, solo. Here you’ll find a relaxed spot serving up rolls, teriyaki, noodle dishes, plus Korean specialties (and you may overhear them speaking Korean in the kitchen). Start with miso soup or salad (with miso dressing) and edamame, then fill yourself up on a salmon or tuna combination. It’s equal parts simple and delicious. It’s a perfect place to eat healthy and stay trendy. This is a classic hidden gem. You’re welcome!

There’s good chicken and there’s chicken that’s tasty as cluck (that wasn’t a typo). Brant St. is home to this fun, laidback resto … you may recognize the name from Hamilton’s original King St. W. location. Doors opened in March 2017 and locals are flocking to the place. Featuring lunch, dinner, and boozy weekend brunch, Coop Wicked Chicken offers fresh in-house food made with high-quality ingredients. Pulled sandwiches are popular … we went with the Smoky BBQ. Shredded meat is doused in a tangy, tasty sauce and the coleslaw adds a nice crunch. Other offerings include Deep-Fried Deviled Eggs (fantastic!), Sriracha Honey Cauliflower (for the vegans in your life), Hardcore Pulled Chicken Poutine, and Chicken & Waffles topped with an egg — this was absolutely phenomenal. The atmosphere is unpretentious and fun. Service is great. If you’re a chicken when it comes to heat, consider yourself warned. This platter of Nashville Chicken Nachos is delicious and pretty spicy (and I grew up on hot foods … trust). There’s also a Mexi Beef or Veg option. The resto has added a digital vending machine for soft drinks (just like ones movie theatres use now) so you can get up and refill your own cups.
This hip Italian bar-slash-gastropub is one of the newest along Brant St., taking over the former Eatalia spot. I found this place while strolling downtown … the stunning aesthetic caught my eye so I went in to find out more, quickly realizing it’s Burlington’s best-kept (burger, pasta, bread … carb-loading) secret. To start, get the Sourdough Bread plate — with housemade bread, ricotta cheese, and an incredible butter compound. Then, just order the gnocchi and wait … it’s made in-house and you’ll quickly realize you’re in a legit Italian resto. There’s oodles of dairy and flavour and it’s so stellar you may nearly explode with happiness. The friendly owner, Jerod, and staff work hard to provide a stellar experience. Oh, and by the way, they’ve got craft beer on beer on beer on beer! Dozens … close to 100 varieties. Culaccino opened around summer 2016 and weekends are fully booked. Who says Italian restos have to be dark, stuffy, and old-fashioned?
Ever finish your pho and want a little more? It’s a little awkward because then you feel like ordering another one, but then you may just worry that you’re being judged. First off, life is short, eat well. Second, instead of getting a regular sized pho, why not an XL sized one? Their beef rice noodle pho comes in 3 sizes with a choice of 3 different meats. These meat options include rare beef, brisket, stewed tripe, beef tendon, beef balls, and chicken! Now that’s quite a list, but just look at the size of that bowl – all for less than $15.
This restaurant on Lakeshore takes me back into time … when owners came out of the back to chat with you, shake your hand, and thank you for visiting. The owner, Pasquale, did just that. He’s old-school, and I’m charmed. Pasquale says his father ran Ristorante Pinocchio (in Etobicoke at Dundas and Islington) for decades and that’s where he began washing dishes at age 12. Speaking of dishes, the food is divine. The antipasto is lovely, with a great selection of salami and prosciutto, while the calamari is nicely seasoned and portioned perfectly. As for pasta, the pappardelle, made in-house, is served with bolognese sauce and makes for a delicious entree. (The gnocchi is downright sinful, although it isn’t made in-house). Meanwhile, the veal is perfectly cooked and is accompanied by tomatoes, roasted potatoes, and broccoli. The owner creates all of the desserts himself and takes great pride in his work. He recommends the mascarpone, and it’s absolutely amazing. Its airy texture is complemented by strawberries, and I detect a hint of booze — Grand Marnier, it turns out. Pasquale’s opened in 2009 and the food and service is wonderful. You must go. On the board at Pasquale’s you’ll be served candied figs stuffed with walnuts, cured meat, roasted peppers, grilled vegetables, olives, apple, and aged cheeses.
