Scam Alert: Halton Police warn of phone scam where residents are asked for SIN

The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is warning residents of a scam whereby someone claiming to be a member of the force has been calling people to ask for Social Insurance Numbers.
The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is warning residents of a scam whereby someone claiming to be a member of the force has been calling people to ask for Social Insurance Numbers.
On Tuesday (July 7), the HRPS tweeted out a scam alert saying that several residents have been contacted by someone claiming to be from the HRPS and they are ‘spoofing’ their phone number to provide an appearance of legitimacy.
Spoofing is when a caller deliberately falsifies the information transmitted to your caller ID display to disguise their identity.
HRPS reminds residents that they would never ask for someone’s SIN over the phone.

Halton residents are asked to report these calls to police immediately if they receive one.
