Police Warn Oakville Seniors of Distraction Thefts

Seniors in Oakville are being warned following two distraction thefts so far this month.

The thefts involve strangers in vehicles approaching older adults who are wearing visible necklaces and rings, say Halton police.

Suspects will strike up a conversation with the victim and make casual physical contact, such as. touching a hand while paying them a compliment.

The thieves then offer “free jewelry” to the victim, placing it around their neck while discreetly removing the victim’s rings and/or necklaces.

They’ll leave behind low-value imitation jewelry, say police.

Anyone who’s been victimized in this manner or by similar means is asked to contact Halton police to report the incident.

Tipsters are asked to contact Det. Omar Nadim with the 2 District criminal investigations bureau at 905-825-4747 ext. 2216.

Tips can also be submitted to Crime Stoppers “See Something?  Hear Something? Know Something? Contact Crime Stoppers” at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), or through the web at
