Officers will be “targeting distracted driving, red light runners, aggressive driving and unsafe turns,” said Insp. Glenn Mannella.
The blitz was initiated this week after police reviewed statistics and saw the trend among commuters.
Twenty crashes were investigated along Derry Rd. last month alone, said Mannella, with 70 per cent of them involving rear-end collisions — many at red lights.

That works out to four collisions each at Trafalgar Rd., James Snow Pkwy., Thompson Rd., Ontario St., and Bronte St.
In one case, a cyclist was hit by a van. Another involved an unsafe lane change.
Offenders include commerical vehicles, too.
Officers from 12 Division will be out with the goal of discouraging dangerous driving habits.
Police “are using a variety of techniques and tools” ranging from unmarked vehicles to bikes and even being on foot, said Mannella.
They’re also reminding drivers about community safety being a shared responsibility.
“Of course, we will be educating motorists if the circumstances warrant it,” said Mannella.
That means you’ll get a warning, instead of a ticket, if you’re lucky.
