Police are investigating following a spate of recent vehicle thefts in Oakville.

Halton police say the vehicles in question are generally removed from residential driveways between the hours of 11:00 pm and 5:00 am.

The vehicles targeted include:

  • 2014 to 2018 Lexus (models: RX Series, LX Series, IS Series, GX Series)
  • 2017 Toyota Highlanders
  • 2015 to 2018 Land Rover (models: Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque)

Police allege a review of residential security camera footage shows suspects approaching the residences on foot, and then utilizing a device to defeat the vehicles’ security systems. It appears that the technology used may be accessing the signal transmitted by the vehicles’ key fobs.

Once inside the vehicle, the suspects are able to start the vehicle and drive away within minutes of their arrival at the residence.

Police are reminding the public of the following vehicle theft prevention tips:

  • Park your vehicle within a locked/secure garage
  • If a garage is not accessible, park another vehicle in front
  • Ensure your unattended vehicle(s) are locked and secure
  • Never leave spare keys in your vehicle
  • Never leave spare keys outside of your residence
  • When not in use, place vehicle keys inside a radio frequency shielding bag/pouch to block cell signals
  • Equip your vehicle with an alarm
  • Equip your vehicle with a GPS tracking device
  • Use other devices to deter thefts (e.g. steering wheel locking device)

Police are asking anyone who sees suspicious activity in their neighbourhoods to report it.

Halton police recently released a photo of a suspect wanted in connection with a July 26 theft in the town:

Anyone with information about these vehicle thefts is asked to contact Det. Omar Nadim at the 2 District Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905 825-4747 ext. 2278.
