Repairs have long been underway in the south end of Oakville for the Lakeshore Rd. Bridge reconstruction over Sixteen Mile Creek.

The project began last January.

Here’s what’s happening now: The bridge contractor started a concrete pour on the bridge deck on August 10.

New steel girders were installed in phases on the spans between the new abutments and rehabilitated bridge piers, and new steel girders were put in place using large cranes, similar to how the old steel girders were removed.

After the old steel girders were removed, repairs to the bridge piers were completed, and the micro-piles for the bridge abutments were installed, tested and accepted and then the east and west abutments were constructed.

The overall scope of the bridge reconstruction work consists of removal and replacement of the existing concrete deck and steel girders and repairs to the existing piers and replacement of the bridge abutments.

The final project includes two travel lanes, a centre turn lane and bikes lanes, plus a wider pedestrian sidewalk with a barrier wall between the sidewalk and vehicles.

New pedestrians railings will be installed, plus pedestrian lookouts will be incorporated into the bridge, complete with LED street lighting.

Here are some images from earlier this summer:

The existing bridge structure was constructed in 1967.

Work is expected to be completed by the end of 2017.
