Celebrants of Diwali will need a permit to set off fireworks in Milton this year.

The Town currently has in place a bylaw that prohibits fireworks in all public spaces such as parks and streets.

Diwali is the five-day festival celebrated mostly by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains and is meant to celebrate new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil, and light over dark. Often, fireworks are used during the celebration which begins on November 14 this year.

Those seeking a permit for fireworks must apply for a temporary permit through the Milton Fire Department’s website ahead of time. Applicants will need to meet requirements such as minimum lot line distances and other safety factors demonstrating that the display will be held a safe manner. Sparklers are not considered fireworks, but must be used with extreme caution.
