Halton Regional Police officers have been cleared by Ontario’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) in relation to an arrest at an Oakville hotel.

On Feb. 18, 2020, police were called to the hotel after reports of a patron “behaving in a disorderly and destructive fashion and threatening harm to himself and others in the building”.

Halton police were dispatched to the hotel. According to the SIU report, the man refused to allow entry to the officers, leading police to forcibly enter the room.

The man then physically resisted arrest, leading to officers “reacting with force of their own”, according to the report.

The man was reportedly tased by two of the officers before being handcuffed.

“The Director of the Special Investigations Unit, Joseph Martino, has determined there are no reasonable grounds to believe that any officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s arrest and injuries”, read the official report.

The SIU is an independent civilian agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.
