A brand new 10.3-million dementia care centre being built in Oakville will be named after a local physician who herself has been diagnosed with early onset dementia.

Patty’s Place, Acclaim Health’s new centre set to open in September, is inspired by the resilience of Dr. Patty Plaxton, who ran a family medical office in Oakville for over 20 years before her diagnosis forced her to retire.

“It is an honour to have Dr. Patty Plaxton’s name grace our centre,” said Angela Brewer, Acclaim Health’s CEO. “Her commitment to caring, to our community and her determination to live her best life, despite her diagnosis, are very much in tune with our own values.

“It is our privilege to help Patty continue caring for our commitment through our centre.”

Dr. Plaxton’s family and friends started a grassroots campaign to name the centre after her to celebrate her commitment to caring for this community.

Together they raised $1.5 million that has been put towards construction of the new centre. A total of $7.4 million has been raised to date.

“We are so happy to see our community rally behind the fundraising campaign,” Plaxton’s family said. “We are sincerely grateful for the generosity people have shown, for their kind words of support and for the exceptional work being down by Acclaim Health here in Oakville.”

A former warehouse located on 2250 Speers Rd., the new 15,0000-square foot state-of-the-art building will feature eight short stay overnight respite beds (only ones in Halton), a 3D immerse technology room, an expanded Adult Day Program for people living with dementia, and caregiver support for families.

Between now and Sept. 30, all donation’s to Patty’s Place will be matched up to $75,000 by Dr. Paxton and her husband, John.

To help raise money for the Patty’s Place, a fundraising event called  Dine in for Dementia is being held on Thursday, Sept. 9. Early bird tickets are $150 and to order some or make a donation, go to www.acclaimhealth.ca.
