Halton District School Board (HDSB) Trustees have selected a name for a new secondary school in Milton that is scheduled to open in the fall of this year.

At a Board meeting on Apr. 7, HDSB Trustees selected “Elsie MacGill Secondary School” as the name for the new school that will be located at 1410 Bronte Street South in southwest Milton.

The school will be named after Elsie MacGill (1905-1980), who was the first woman to earn a Master’s degree in aeronautical engineering along with being the first practising Canadian female engineer and aircraft designer.

MacGill went on to become a chief aeronautical engineer in 1940 and oversaw the Canadian production of Hawker Hurricane fighter planes during World War 2, producing over 1,450 aircrafts.

“Elsie MacGill’s engineering and science background provides a good fit to the I-STEM program which will be offered at the school beginning in September 2022,” said Mark Duley, Principal of Elsie MacGill Secondary School.

“I-STEM stands for Innovation, Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, which is an interdisciplinary program pairing classroom learning with experiential learning and mentorship.”

The school is currently under construction and is scheduled to open in the fall of 2021.
