Milton Public Library Encouraging Children and Families to Read This Summer

While many students and teachers in Halton may be thinking of putting the books down for a bit once summer vacation rolls around, the Milton Public Library (MPL) is encouraging children and families to read.

The MPL is inviting children and their families to register for the 2019 TD Summer Reading Club – the largest summer reading program for kids of all ages and abilities in Canada.

Anyone who is interested in participating, according to a recent MPL press release, can register for the program as of Saturday, June 22, 2019.

However, children will be able to register free-of-charge for the program throughout the summer. And those who participate in the program will be able to earn ballots for prize draws for each full hour of completed reading.

The MPL is just one of more than 2,000 public libraries in Canada that are participating in the program.

“Milton Public Library is once again delighted to participate in the annual Summer Reading Club in partnership with TD Bank,” Chief Librarian Mark Williams said in a statement. “In doing so, we’re able to support the ongoing literacy development of participants in a way that continues to emphasize reading as a fun activity.”

In order to celebrate the kick off of this year’s program, a number of activities will be held at the Main Library from 1:30 until 3:30 p.m. Activities will include contests, science experiments with Mad Science, fun with bubbles, slime, prizes, and much more.

However, that’s not all that’s happening at the library on June 22.

The MPL and Milton Transit will also be kicking off the Read and Ride program at the Main Library with Mayor Gordon Krantz at 2:00 p.m.

“Children and teens, 16 years of age and younger, are encouraged to travel to and from the library for summer reading programs and materials and all around town using environmentally-friendly conventional Milton Transit,” notes the release. “The Read and Ride Program runs from July 2 to August 31, 2019, participants ride for free by showing their library card with a valid Read and Ride sticker on it.”
