The Town of Milton is prepared to pursue the Canadian Open – at Rattlesnake Point Golf Club – in the hopes of keeping the world-class tournament in Halton Region.

“In the event the Canadian Open leaves Oakville, we would love to see it come to Milton,” said Mayor Gord Krantz.

“We want to make sure we’re prepared to act if the opportunity presents itself.”

The future of Oakville’s Glen Abbey golf course is unknown as town council recently voted to seek heritage designation and prevent real estate development at 1333 Dorval Dr.

Owner ClubLink is proposing a mixed complex which includes 3,222 residential units, 121,000 square feet of commercial space and roughly 124 acres of permanent, publicly-accessible green space.

Glen Abbey is also home to Golf Canada headquarters and the Canadian Golf Museum and Hall of Fame.

ClubLink also owns Rattlesnake, located at 5407 Halton Regional Rd. 25; the RBC Canadian Open attracts at least 100,000 people to Oakville over the course of one week.

“Milton is willing to consider options for the lands through the current Regional Plan review process which will allow us to present a competitive option to Golf Canada,“ said director of economic development and strategic initiatives Andrew Siltala.

“In addition to the economic benefits to the local economy, there are high performance sport and science synergies that can be explored with our partners in the Milton Education Village.”

Milton is already considered the home of Canadian cycling, anchored by the presence of Cycling Canada.

The Mattamy National Cycling Centre is hosting a leg of the TISSOT UCI Track World Cup for the next three years starting in December.

Securing a permanent home for the Canadian Open and Golf Canada would be Milton’s second world-class sporting event paired alongside a national sports organization.

Glen Abbey is scheduled to host the 2018 Canadian Open.
