Here’s What’s Happening with Lakeshore Road in Oakville

If you’re an Oakville resident, or if you frequent the area of Lakeshore Road quite regularly, there is some upcoming work being done that you may want to be aware of.
If you’re an Oakville resident, or if you frequent the area of Lakeshore Road quite regularly, there is some upcoming work being done that you may want to be aware of.
Tomorrow, March 12, Union Gas – a Canadian natural gas storage, distribution, and transmission company – will begin to work on installing a new gas line on each side of the road.
This work, which is anticipated to be completed by the end of April, will start at Navy Street and end at Dunn Street.
According to the Town of Oakville website, work will be undertaken one block at a time.

“Individual blocks will be closed throughout the duration of the Union Gas work,” notes the website. “The individual block will reopen once the work is completed. Lakeshore Road will remain open to pedestrian traffic.”
This work is the result of Lakeshore Road East coming to the end of its lifespan and needing a major update.
“The town undertook extensive research and public consultation to identify broader opportunities to improve traffic, beautify streets and improve pedestrian/cycle ways in the downtown,” reads the Town of Oakville website.
As a result, as part of the town’s downtown plan, council approved a Downtown Transportation and Streetscape Study (DTS).
“The DTS assessed the current traffic and roadway conditions in downtown Oakville and created recommendations to enhance the roadways, beautify streets, improve pedestrian/cycle ways and revitalize the Towne Square, by introducing design standards as well as increasing connectivity, mobility and accessibility,” notes the website.
Back in 2015, council also approved the timing for the Lakeshore Road reconstruction and streetscape project.
The first phase will consist of the work beginning tomorrow and the second phase (between Dunn and Allan streets) will commence in 2020, taking place between the spring and the fall.

Additionally, residents and business owners are encouraged to come out to one of three information sessions regarding the reconstruction projects. These information sessions are taking place on March 14 at The Project Office (193 Church St.) from 8:30 to 10 a.m., from 12:30 to 2 p.m., or from 6 to 8 p.m.
