Books are not the only thing you can check out at the Oakville Public Library.

Good news for all gardeners in Oakville, the Oakville Public Library’s Seed Library is officially open for business for the season.

If you’re wondering what a seed library is, it is exactly what is sounds like.

The Seed Library, which was first established back in 2017, provides library customers with the opportunity to harvest their own food, grow their own plants, and be part of a community-wide sharing initiative.

Through this program, which is available at all Oakville Public Library branches, customers are able to ‘borrow’ a selection of seeds at no cost. They are then able to plant the seeds in their own gardens, and once the plants are matured customers can harvest the seeds to return to the library.

According to a news release from the library, “The simple cycle of borrowing, growing, harvesting, and returning seeds promotes a culture of sharing within our community and provides hands-on experiences that allow customers to better understand agriculture and sustainability.”

A few seeds that are available include tomatoes, black beauty zucchini, snow peas, dill, and chives.
