Here’s How You Can Have Your Say in Burlington’s 2019 Budget

Before a decision is made, according to a press release, the city is inviting its residents to give their feedback at two town hall events taking place this month.
The first event is being held tomorrow, Feb. 7, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mayor Marianne Meed Ward will be hosting a live, call-in telephone town hall. During this town hall, residents can listen in and ask questions about the proposed 2019 budget priorities.
Burlington residential phone numbers, according to the release, will be randomly selected to be part of the town hall.

Anyone who does not receive a telephone invitation can call 1-800-837-8058 at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 7 to join the town hall.
Another town hall will be taking place on Monday, Feb. 11 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. This in-person town hall will be hosted by Meed Ward in the auditorium at Central Arena, located at 519 Drury Ln.
Senior city staff will be at both town hall sessions to help answer questions.
“Public engagement is one of the most important things when it comes to city matters, particularly budget,” Meed Ward said in the release.
“With engagement, residents can not only see exactly where their tax dollars are going, but also understand how they and Burlington will benefit. It also gives us, their elected representatives, a chance to hear their thoughts and ideas on what’s been proposed for the 2019 budget.”
Another way Burlington residents can get involved is by registering to speak to Burlington City Council as a delegation at the following Committee of the Whole meeting. The meeting will take place at City Hall in Council Chambers, located at 426 Brant St. on the second floor. Details are as follows.

Feb. 7, 2019 at 9:30 a.m.: Delegations from the public on capital and operating budgets
The proposed operating budget for 2019 is $167,556,586. This money, according to the city’s 2019 Proposed Operating Budget document, will go towards the following expenses: capital, public safety, maintenance, internal support and administration, transit, roads and transportation, local boards, leisure, provision for Joseph Brant Hospital, design and build, customer relations and citizen representation, mayor and council, as well as corporate revenues and expenditures.
The proposed 2019 capital budget for the city is $96.8 million with a 10-year proposed total of $819.3 million.
On March 25 at 6:30 p.m. a council meeting will be held to consider the approval of the proposed budgets.
