Members of the Halton Regional Police Service Regional Fraud unit went to Edmonton, Alberta to take custody of a woman wanted in connection to a fortune telling scam that she previously ran in Oakville. 

According to police, Cynthia Burt, (23) operated in Oakville under the name Jasmine Burt.

It is alleged that she defrauded her victim of approximately $200,000 by preying upon their vulnerable situation. 

The accused had advertised online as “Psychic Jasmine” and sometimes operated out of a storefront on Lakeshore Road in Oakville, police say. This was reported to police in December 2017 and shortly after the investigation started, police say the accused left Oakville and eventually relocated in Edmonton, Alberta. 

“Edmonton police also had reports of Burt defrauding victims in their area and she was ultimately arrested and charged in Alberta as well,” reads a Halton Police news release.

On June 14, 2019, fraud detectives went to Edmonton and returned the accused to Ontario where she was charged with one count of alleged fraud over $5,000, and one alleged count of harassing phone calls in relation to the same investigation.

The accused will be appearing in Milton court on July 23, 2019.
