Message from the Oakville & Milton Humane Society:

Rain is beautiful. She is a loyal, affectionate dog who is looking for someone special. Rain, understandably, has trust issues. You can expect her to walk away at first and watch to see what you are going to do next, so don’t be surprised if she is a bit aloof.  She is just playing hard to get. You will know when she feels comfortable because she will give you kisses and follow you around.  Privacy will become a thing of your past! You will always have someone to talk to.  She will likely want to share your popcorn, but unfortunately for her, popcorn is not on her diet list.  Rain suffers from significant allergies.  These express themselves by itchy skin and ear infections.  It is important that she remains on her veterinary diet for the rest of her life. Unfortunately, this also means that human treats, for that matter, all but special medical treats are off limits.

Like most Shepherds, Rain is intelligent.  She loves to work with you and learn new things.  She knows her name, sit, go to your bed/crate, down and drop it.  Playing ball and tug are her favourite!

Rain is comfortable just hanging out. She has what we call an “off switch” meaning if nothing happening; she will go and lie down.  She is a great house dog. Rain is also happy to go for walks with you, though she is a bit of a green-eyed monster.  She does not want to share her person with another animal.  She wants and needs to be the ONLY pet in the household.

Rain is house and crate trained but does worry when her person leave.  This is totally understandable as she has been left before. Until she feels comfortable and she learns that when you leave, it is not forever, this will be a work in progress.  She will whine and cry. She is on anti-anxiety medication that helps her to cope.

While Rain has a ton of positives, but her one major challenge is remaining calm around other animals on a walk.  She barks, growls, screams, pulls, and lunges towards them.  She will require considerable work to overcome this.  She has made great strides in her foster home, but when she goes to her new home it is reasonable to expect that some of these behaviours will return until she trusts that her family will not let anything bad happen to her. Given that we are all trying to social distance this is a great advantage for her.  Distance is one of the key ingredients in working with this problem. For this reason it would also be helpful if her new home has a six foot wooden fence that blocks her from watching dogs and wildlife so that she can have fun with her family without other animals becoming a big distraction.

Since she is a strong girl who can be very reactive on leash, we are searching for a home where everyone is over 18 years and it is recommended that her new owner has dog experience, is patient and is willing to continue work on her dog reactivity issues.

If you can give her the time she needs to settle in, we are pretty sure she will melt your heart.
