Premier Doug Ford’s recent announcement that Toronto and Peel would be moved to a 28-day lockdown to help stop the spread of COVID-19, has resulted in concerns about residents from these areas visiting Halton Hills.

“Let me be clear,” said Mayor Rick Bonnette.

“I am not going to say that our local borders are shut. This is way above my authority and that of council. I remind people that wherever you live, to please adhere to the health and safety protocols as set out by the Minister of Health and this means stay home as much as you can. I do not want to see Halton Hills in lockdown which would be devastating to local businesses, sports and leisure activities, etc.”

This statement was made at a Nov. 23 Council Meeting, as the mayor encouraged residents of Toronto and Peel to refrain from entering Halton Hills until after the 28-day lockdown period has ended.

In terms of questions regarding the eligibility of participants in recreation programs, the municipality continues to adhere to its policy which states that the Town of Halton Hills does not limit program participation by address.

Registered programs that last multiple weeks including fitness classes, swim lessons and camps have a 20% non-resident rate included in the fee, as noted in the corporate rates and fees report.

For single admission programs, there is only one fee; an approach that is consistent with other municipalities within Halton Region.

The Town of Halton Hills will continue to monitor participation and enforce all health and safety precautionary measures.
