It’s no surprise that the holidays will look different this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fortunately, Halton Hills’ annual Tree of Hope will still be around to spread some holiday cheer.

The vision for a grand tree lighting celebration began as the initial idea for what would later become the Tree of Hope in Georgetown.

This vision included a large evergreen covered with breathtaking sparkling Christmas lights.

President of Light Up the Hills, Gerry Kentner, envisioned this in 2008 and felt that the community needed something to give them hope at a time when the Canadian economy was in a mild recession.

Since then, a Tree of Hope was planted in Georgetown and as of 2015, a Tree of Hope is now also in Acton (2010) and Glen Williams (2013), with plans to expand the “Light Up The Hills” initiative into more of the communities that make up Halton Hills.

Each tree is a 25’/7.6m Colorado Blue Spruce that is planted one year prior to being decorated with over 2000 LED lights.

This year, the annual tree lighting ceremony was unable to take place due to COVID-19 precautions, but residents will still be able to enjoy the Tree of Hope that will be lit for the season.

The Town of Halton Hills hopes to be able to bring back the Opening Ceremony for the Tree of Hope in 2021.
