Exciting New Development in the Design for Oakville’s Towne Square

The final preferred design has been been chosen for Towne Square.
As part of Oakville’s plan to revitalize their downtown area, the town is redesigning Towne Square. Towne Square is a public space located at 210 Lakeshore Road and is used by businesses and the public for events and leisure.
According to the Town of Oakville website, the new design aims to enhance the vibrancy of the neighbourhood and provide more opportunities for public events. The new design will increase the amount of trees planted in the square and reduce the size of the proposed water feature, particularly the ‘width’ in the north-south dimension.
The final preferred design is called “Turning Leaves.” It was recently presented to the public and stakeholders in a consultation at the Trafalgar Park Community Centre.

“Turning Leaves” maintains key elements but replaces paving, furnishings, light fixtures and tree planters to match the Lakeshore Road streetscape redevelopment. It also has new trees, granite seat walls, a paved pedestrian ramp along George Street corridor and assorted garden beds. There is also an exciting new water feature that will connect Lakeshore Road and the Square, and architectural lighting that will enhance the space for year-round enjoyment.

Over the coming weeks, town staff will present the preferred design concept to the Heritage Committee on May 14 and the Community Services Committee on May 21. It is expected to go to Council for final approval on May 27.
The construction will begin spring of 2019 with the redevelopment with the first phase of the Lakeshore Road construction.
