And where there’s food, there’s music.
JUNO award-winning reggae artist Sonia Collymore will be performing, along with the OWO Saxophone Quartet, Hope Centre Gospel Choir, and Rhythmic By Nature – Interactive Drumming Circles.
The annual event is hosted by the Oakville Museum in partnership with the Canadian Caribbean Association of Halton.
The picnic commemorates August 1, 1834 – the day slavery was abolished in Canada and throughout the British Empire – and will include a number of fun activities, performances and music for the entire family.
Oakville’s Emancipation Day dates back to the 1850s, when African-Canadians from across the nation would gather at George’s Square in honour of their journey to freedom via the Underground Railroad.
Admission is free.
The event is on August 7 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
All ages are welcome.
